We are on our way - well, kinda. One GPS isn't talking (for purposes of this story, if the GPS being referred to is Vivian, it will be the VPS), by the way, the one that wasn't talking was not the VPS. We find our way to Mt. Jackson and stop at the Welcome Center to pick up brochures. We discover that near the covered bridge we are headed to, there is a corn maze. There are pictures of the corn maze and it looks fun. For anyone who has never seen one, basically it is a huge field of corn with the maze you must find your way through. Dust is flying (but don't worry Sophia, we are not speeding...) and we are filled with anticipation and excitment...Vivian is wondering if she is wearing the right shoes for a corn maze. We make the turn and the car erupts with laughter - there is the very large, very bare Corn Maze Field. What we forgot to take into consideration in all the excitement and what three GPS systems could not tell us was that you must have corn, it must be in season which is not going to happen in the winter.
Beautiful Bridge - we are walking around and exploring the bridge - very narrow covered bridge. I am walking toward Susan who is at the opposite end of the bridge - I hear something look behind me - it is a tractor, the Double-Wide version of a tractor pulling something behind it that swings a little from side to side...it is as tall as it is wide and bright red. Vivian and I hold our breath wondering if the tractor is going to make it through the narrow bridge...that is not what we should have been worried about, as the tractor enters the bridge we start to see arms waving - and then we see her - it is Susan - My lovely Susan is playing chicken with a DoubleWide Tractor pulling a swingy thingy. I realize then and there I will have a lot of material for the blog tonight. I was right!!
The only thing that outnumbers navigational devices in our car would be the vast number of brochures we picked up in Mt. Jackson - we decide that going to the Potato Chip Factory would be fun. Susan and Vivian are excited about seeing them make the chips, I am having a vision of Lucy and Ethel in the chocolate factory and hoping that these two will give me a story just a funny. So far they certainly have not let me down. Think about this - if I have put this much in the blog...how much have I left out. These two are hilarious and I am having one of the best vacations of my life.
In route to said factory, we are stopped by train - look to left and there is a museum - park, pay, enter...WOW. This museum houses floats from parades - big parades like the Rose Bowl Parade - they are beautiful and we even got to sit on some of them. Our personal tour guide (we were the only ones in the entire museum), Debbie, was great. She gave us lots of interesting tidbits - she pointed out a tree with flowers that had been on a float in a parade - she said the flowers on the tree were flowers from the tables at the Inaugeration Dinner of President Kennedy. It was truly breathtaking and it was fun sitting on the floats too. We stop in the gift shop on the way out and look around. They have some beautiful candles. Vivian finds a pretty blue one and we look at the name and CRACK UP...in the midst of candles with names like Honeysuckle, Grandmas Cookies, etc. - Vivian is holding BUTT NAKED Candles. Susan and I said the name out loud at least 69 times until Vivian was beet red. We bought the candle for Vivian and things only got worse. The really good thing is that other than Debbie and a guy that worked there that never talked, although in all fairness he was not given much opportunity, we were still the only ones in the joint. I am over buying a dog tag that says Chris to wear around my neck...how sweet! And Susan has found the Love Meter - this is the machine you put the quarter in and it will tell you how hot you are baby. We all did this - oh, and did I mention Susan's shirt was kinda unbuttoned, you need to know this...so anyway, we do the Love Meter and there is much discussion about the meter readings. Let's start putting this together...butt naked, Susan's shirt mis-buttoned, we might have mentioned that we bought her butt naked candles because she (Vivian) walks around BN (She Doesn't and she will require that such a disclaimer be in this blog), and the very indepth discussion over Love Meter Readings, well I guess they all started running through Vivians head and put it on overload, maybe it was the VPS, but suddenly in the middle of the enchanted forest gift shop Vivian proclaims AND WE ARE NOT LESBIANS. I am sitting on the red velvet throne for this proclamation and it is a good thing - I would have wet my pants. This too will come up again in todays blog. Good Bye Debbie and thank you!
It is now 2 something and we need to eat some lunch. We are headed to the Italian joint that Debbie told us about and lucky me as there are three GPS systems telling me how to get there - the one that was not talking earlier is now talking and her owner is repeating what she says, just in case I could have possibly missed any of it and Lord knows, I tried. Our lunch was great, and so was the service. We are happy and head out...for the Shenandoah National Forest that we could not get into yesteday. On the way we stop at the Woodstock Rescue Squad for Apple Butter - there is no one in there and we start to leave the money and take the AB, but Vivian slides down the pole and finds somebody (ok, she didn't really slide down the pole, but if there had been one she would have..)...might I add that we were originally headed to Walmart and then Rescue Squad, but we passed it because NOT ONE GPS WAS ON!! Make it to WM - quick trip, most important purchase is John Denver Greatest Hits (really miss you Mary Beth) as it only seems right for this day - about 72 degrees (but when it gets cold we are prepared) and beautiful blue skies!
We arrive at the SNF and it is beautiful - Susan and I have both been there before and we are both enjoying Viv's reaction as we remember our first time there. We stop at several overlooks, take some pictures and look for deer ( I have seen deer both times I have been there and wish I had not said that as I am not sure it is going to happen today). We are on a mission to find a hiking trail - preferably one that ends at a waterfall. We stop at several - although we are not very experienced hikers, we know these are not for us - words like - very intense, extreme, experienced, dangerous, many many hours - words like this let us know. Finally we stop at Big Rock Woman Trail (okay, it was Little Stoney Man Trail, but hey it is our journey...) it is about a mile round trip, but is is straight up. We decide to go for it. It is now about 52 degrees and very windy, so I break out the really warm coat from the back of the car - having learned nothing about being overdressed from my Natural Bridge adventure. I must say this coat now completes my look, I am officaly Miss Fahnsestock. Black work out pants, white tank top, grey OTS sweat shirt (thanks babe...), drab grey/green warm coat about 4 sizes too big, brown plaid tennis shoes and a bright green scarf to brighten the whole ensemble. Enough about me, just trying to give you a visual, things I learned from this hike, that I will never forget again and would like to pass on to all of you:
- Before you go for your hike - pee.
- Read the sign that shows the route, BEFORE you start up the mountain.
- Before you go for your hike - pee. (all you men out there can just shut up!)
- If you did not do 1 and 3 above, then when someone in your group hops on a log and says SAVE A HORSE RIDE A LOG, sit down immediately!
We get to the top of the very high mountain (when you live in Florida, all mountains are very high - and when you climb them they are even higher...) - the sign below had said it was the best place in the park to watch the sunset (yes, we read that part, not the part that showed which direction the trail went) and it was so beautiful - we were very proud of ourselves. I might add that about 5 minutes into the trip I was now carrying the oh-so-warm-aren't-I-glad-I-brought-it-coat and by 20 minutes I was also carrying the sweatshirt. There are these big rocks right on the edge of said very big mountain and Susan is Rose and the Rock is Titanic and the Picture is Priceless and I can't believe she is doing it! We head back down, I guess Vivian thinks the Corn Maze Prize must still be up for grabs and she is gone - like in five minutes down the mountain. I am the last one down as I am taking pictures. In the quiet I hear something, I can tell it has four legs and is not a real heavy animal, my guess is a deer, not heavy enough to be a bear. I stand on a flat rock for what seems like forever, but was really about five minutes (or a trip down the mountain for Vivian). I am hoping if I am really still I will be able to get a picture. Keep hearing the animal and I am excited - still standing very still. As I am standing there I start to question when I learned so much about wild animals and their movements - how do I know the sound a deer makes from that of a bear? Whosh, down with Vivian and Susan. As I am telling them this story and we are rounding a bend, we come upon Two Deer! We stop the car and take the pictures and decide that it was in fact a perfect day.
As we are rounding the bend and heading towards home - the JD CD purchased earlier is still playing and we are singing Country Roads - Susan is singing with her head out the window as she is a little sick from all the turns and twists in the dark, but other than that it was one of my favorite days and I can't wait to bring Chris up here and go hiking with him and get to see him experience this beauty for the first time.
